Palheiros
The “palheiros” are fishermen’s houses built on the dunes on piles. Initially they were inhabited as a shelter or a temporary house during the harvest time. Until the 20th century, they weren’t fixed builders, since it was possible to move them to escape the cyclones, tides and sand movements.
In Esmoriz and Cortegaça, there are still nucleis where it’s possible to appreciate the authenticity of some of these architectural examples.
